AbstractThe strengthening of communicative and pragmalinguistic approaches to studying linguistic phenomena and discursive practices led to the intensification of the study of broadly understood manipulative influence in various fields of communication and at various stages of discourse. The article deals with chosen issues of manipulative influence in the academic discourse within both national and intercultural communication. The results of the lexical-semantic, morpho-syntactic, pragmatic and linguocultural analysis of empirical material show that even though Belarusian, Chinese, Iranian and Korean students know the term “linguistic manipulation”, they interpret its constituent elements in different ways. The differences in consciousness are fixed on the phonetic (intonation coloring), lexical (semantics of the word), and grammatical levels and are reflected in communication.
