AbstractThe way people dress is not only a reflection of the physical environment but also a powerful tool for communication and manipulating of social practice. For some periods and regions, archaeologists have little chance to study the clothing of the past in full. Direct information about the textile production of this time within the South Baltic is scarce and incomplete. We can but rely on imprints and pseudomorphs, and a few partially preserved pieces of cord and textile. Cremation as a main funeral tradition of the Late Bronze Age destroyed all the direct sources for the reconstruction of prehistoric garments. The situation changes somewhat during the Early Iron Age with the advent of a new tradition - face urns -which offer a glimpse, at least, of upper body decoration. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the data of the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age of the southern Baltic Sea for the identification of dress elements and further studies within the scope of male and female clothing.
