Skandynawia modelem dla nowoczesnego świata. O popularyzatorskiej roli książek podróżniczych w konstruowaniu obrazu Skandynawii w krajach anglosaskich w latach trzydziestych XX wieku

Abstract

As a result of foreign discourses present in the inter-war period, an image of progressive community emerged in Northern Europe consisting of three Scandinavian countries. Their social and political progressiveness entered the international discourse as an established figure of thought. For most observers and admirers of the Scandinavian way, journalist Marquis Childs’ 1936 bestseller Sweden: The Middle Way plays the role of a guide, popularizing Scandinavia as a laboratory for US progressive ideals. This chapter argues that lesser-known travel literature on the Nordic countries that was published in the 1930s and 1940s played an important role in popularizing the Scandinavian progressiveness as a model for the world. Indeed, the popularity of travel literature may provide an explanation for the flexibility and plasticity of the Scandinavian image that has evoked attention and admiration across broad spectrums of international public opinion.
