AbstractThe purpose of this chapter is to present and clarify routes of Islamic banking development in the Gulf region on the example of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The countries’ Islamic banking market financial picture is presented against conventional banking development in the region. Further perspectives for development of the industry in the region are also indicated, including factors negatively influencing possible future growth. Although Gulf region is being perceived as the origin of whole Islamic finance industry, there are still some factors working against the development of Islamic banking there. The chapter presents also a short introduction to Islamic banking principles, giving theoretical setup onto further analysis.
