Konwicki czyta Miłosza. Obraz zła w "Dolinie Issy" Tadeusza Konwickiego

Maria Szoska

Abstract

In the author’s view, the 2013 digital reconstruction of The Issa Valley by Tadeusz Konwicki should lead to a re-reading of the film, which is somewhat forgotten today. The digitalized version allows to appreciate properly the artistic dimension of the work, which may be considered to be its greatest asset. In her paper, the author is not limited solely to the interpretation of the image layer of the film, but describes the novel-film relation, showing the originality of Konlicki’s transformation of Miłosz’s work. Konwicki, adapting the prototype, made significant changes, including exposing Czesław Miłosz’s biography, which influenced the final message of the film. In its main part, the paper focuses on the problem of evil, which is not only metaphysical, but also real in the Issa Valley. This evil is represented by the forces of nature, demons inhabiting the surroundings, as well as demons controlling the souls of the protagonists. This evil evokes anxiety in the viewer, intensified by the visual and suggestive layers of the picture.
