Archaeological investigations at Unisław inwestern Poland have revealed a previouslyunknown stronghold of the Teutonic Order—thefirst of its type discovered in Prussia.Comprising a timber-and-earth fortresserected on an older Slavic settlement, the com-plex functioned up to the AD 1320s, beforebeing replaced by a masonry castle. This newevidence illuminates how such strongholdsdeveloped during the colonisation and forma-tive years of the State of the Teutonic Order, and highlights the need for the reconsiderationof assumptions concerning the associatedarchitecture.
