Foreign Direct Investment as one of the factors in globalisation: why does the European Union need to pursue an active investment policy?
AbstractThe purpose of the following chapter is to provide an overview of the current European Union (EU) position in terms of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Since 2017 there has been a growing push for FDI in the European Union. Foreign Direct Investment implemented in the EU provides the investor with an opportunity to become recognizable and economically active on the markets of 28 Member States (MS). The leading position of the EU in this context is undisputable, but for the past few years there has been a strong trend to secure European investors’ position on external markets, while, at the same time, protecting European interests when external FDI is developed in one of the MS. The main purpose of the research to outline the signifi cance of the FDI for the EU economy and, subsequently, to explain the latest actions undertaken by European Union in that fi eld. First, the research presents the FDI as one of the key elements of globalisation, followed by an analysis of European FDI and how FDI on the European market is conducted and, fi nally, the author investigates and assesses the current measures taken by the European Commission in the fi eld of investment policy, with a particular focus on Foreign Direct Investment.
