Extraordinary field condition - interdisciplinary workshops for archaeology students

Abstract

Archaeology in Poland, unlike in some Western countries, is one of the fields of historical science. The extensive methodology of field archaeology researches is also associated with skills and knowledge acquired during studies at faculties of technical universities. Studying archaeology in Poland takes place in the form of lectures, exercises and field practice on archaeological sites. While conducting research works in archaeological sites, very often a priority task for students are simple technical activities. The work schedule is determined by limited time of research project. Such conditions require efficient use of already possessed skills. For this reason, it is difficult to learn and implement new documentation technologies while performing researches. The article presents results of research - didactic project. In attendance at one of educational activities carried out during archaeological research in the difficult terrain of sand dunes. The works were carried out in Poland, in small Pomeranian city of Łeba, near the ruins of medieval church of St. Nicholas. The project was held as a part of the cooperation of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology, University of Gdansk and the Department of Geodesy of Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Gdansk University of Technology. During the field project, a series of workshops on spatial measurements, processing of digital documentation and marketing techniques were performed. The project was attended by students of the Archaeology of the University of Gdansk and lecturers of cooperating institutions. The article presents a short description of the object, working conditions, their workflow and selected aspects of conducted workshops with their effects. The impact of occurred natural conditions on educational activities war also indicated. The students learned to solve problems related to newly encountered conditions of fieldwork and learned the way of taking actions in media working in the field of social archaeology. The article also indicates the skills that students should acquire. A way of implementing educational elements during the research projects conducted by universities was presented.
