Günter Grass und der Wiederaufbau Danzigs in der Nachkriegszeit

Mirosław Ossowski

n 1945 almost the entire historical centre of Gdańsk has been turned into rubble. The rebuilding of the historical city is a part of the post-war history of the town. In the article I base on the book by Jacek Friedrich about the reconstruction of Gdańsk. Günter Grass visited the town in 1975 to make the documentary "Teure Geschichte" about the rebuilding. He recognized the city’s reconstruction as exemplary. Grass wrote about the film and the rebuilding in the novel "The Flounder", which is analysed here. The article also discusses the following texts of Grass: "Dog Years", "The Rat", "The Call of the Toad", "Peeling the Onion", and it shows his relationship to the modern Gdańsk.
