AbstractThis article is an analysis of sycamore motives, which occurred in collection of Warmian and Masurian folk songs elaborated in XIX and XX century. The purpose of this study was to define function botanic vocabulary mentioned in folkloristic texts and to compare poetic representation ofsycamore motif with its role in every-day-life and culture of Warmia and Masuria’s inhabitants. Name sycamore used in folk songs in five functions: mimetic, mimetic relational, utility, metaphoric and decorative. Mimetic function refers to contexts in which the name of the plant was used to create the natural background of the events. In mimetic relational function sycamore is a place of action for people or animals. In the songs in which the plant was practical used by man, the word was used in utility function. Theessence of metaphoric function is creating a metaphor and decorative function has only stylistic character.
