Sobralia fugax (Orchidaceae: Sobraliae) - a new species from Colombia described on the basis of morphological study and phylogenetic analyses

Przemysław Baranow , Magdalena Dudek

A new species of Sobralia from Colombia is described and illustrated. Based on morphological and molecular evidence, it is classified under the type section of the genus. The new species is unique among the other species of the genus by its greenish, fleshy sepals and strongly recurvate ovary that determines the downward orientation of the flowers. Additionally, the sepals and petals are not reflexed, making the flower appearance much more slender and less open than in the other species of the section. As there are no other morphologically similar species within the section, the discussion is based on a comparison of the new taxon against its closest relatives according to our phylogenetic results inferred from ITS and matK regions
